PORTOLAN ATLAS - France (?), ca. 1600
Atlas of Mediterranean area containing 6 nautical charts:
1. West central Mediterranean (Sicily, part of Sardinia, coast of Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya) - 2. West central Mediterranean (eastern coast of Spain, Balearic Islands, France, and Algeria - 3. Italy and neighboring coasts - 4. Aegean Sea - 5. Western Mediterranean - 6. Eastern Mediterranean
Parchment, 5 ff. (6 sheets folded in center and pasted back to back on cardboard and to front and back covers); 310 × 211 mm. (map size, 290 × 405 mm. on double page openings). Bifolia attached sequentially. Black band borders.
Black and red ink for nomenclature in a minuscule script with area names in display script; land masses outlined in color, islands painted gold, green, blue, or red; each chart has from 3 to 14 compass roses with usual 32 rhumb line network with black, red, and green ink for the principal directions; no latitude or longitude; unnumbered scale of distance on each chart; decorated with colorful plume designs, coats of arms, gold and silver.
Bound, ca. 1600, in brown calf, blind tooled, ties missing. ..
