A taxonomic treatment of the Helichrysum panormitanum group
Helichrysum panormitanum Tineo ex Gussone (1844: 467) ≡ Helichrysum rupestre subsp. panormitanum (Tineo ex
Gussone) Arcangeli (1894: 697).
Helichrysum panormitanum subsp. panormitanum.
Type:―ITALY. Sicily, in rupibus calcareis prope Panormum, Scala di Maseddu [manu Tineo], s.d., Tineo s.n. [manu Gussone] (NAP-
GUSS!, lectotype designated by Galbany-Casals et al. 2006: 70).
= Gnaphalium rupestre Rafinesque (1814: 41) non Pourret (1788: 320), nom. illeg. (Art. 53.1 of ICN, McNeill et al. 2012) ≡ Helichrysum
rupestre Candolle (1838: 182), nom. illeg. (Art. 52.2 of ICN).
Type:―ITALY. Sicily, in rupis calcareis, May, Tineo 551 (PAL-8720, neotype designated by Aghababyan et al. 2007: 1286).
Distribution:―Although this subspecies was reported by some authors as scattered along the coast between the territories of
Palermo and Trapani Provinces (see Giardina et al. 2007), it can be found only in inland areas and should be considered as
endemic to the mountains (“Monti di Palermo“) surrounding the alluvial plain of Palermo (“Conca d’Oro“), up to Alcamo.
Helichrysum panormitanum subsp. stramineum (Gussone) Brullo & Brullo (2013: 43−44) ≡ Helichrysum
stramineum Gussone (1844: 467) ≡ Helichrysum rupestre var. stramineum (Gussone) Fiori (1927: 672) ≡ Helichrysum
panormitanum var. stramineum (Gussone) Raimondo in Giardina et al. (2007: 362).
Type:―ITALY. Sicily, Sferracavallo, s.d., Tineo s.n. (NAP!, lectotype designated by Galbany-Casals et al. 2006: 71).
Distribution:―Endemic to the coastal capes to the west of Palermo, from Mt. Pellegrino to Castellammare del Golfo.
Helichrysum panormitanum subsp. brulloi Iamonico & Pignatti, subsp. nov.
Type:―ITALY. Sicily, Monte Cofano, 25 May 1973, Brullo s.n. (CAT!, holotype).
− Helichrysum panormitanum subsp. cophanense Brullo & Brullo (2013: 44), nom. inval. (Art. 39.2 of ICN).
Diagnosis:―Helichrysum panormitanum subsp. brulloi differs from H. panormitanum subsp. panormitanum in inferior
leaves flat or slightly revolute (all leaves clearly relovute in the subsp. panormitanum), capitula arranged in dense corymbs
(lax corymbs), involucral bracts pale-yellow (golden-yellow), the outer ones rounded (lanceolate to ovate), the inner ones
4.5−5.5 × 2.0−2.5 mm (5.0–6.5 mm × 1.8−2.3 mm).
Distribution:―Endemic to Monte Cofano (Trapani Province), an isolated mount-cape in Western Sicily, Favignana and
Levanzo (Egadi Islands).
Etymology:―The taxon is dedicated to Prof. S. Brullo (Catania) who first thoroughly studied the plants collected in
Monte Cofano.
Notes:―Brullo & Brullo (2013: 44) described “Helichrysum panormitanum subsp. cophanense C.Brullo & Brullo”,
but the name was not validly published, since the diagnosis was given in Italian, not in Latin or English as required by the
Art. 39.2 of ICN (McNeill et al. 2012). As a consequence, a new subspecies name is proposed here.
Helichrysum panormitanum subsp. messeriae (Pignatti) Brullo & Brullo (2013: 44) ≡ Helichrysum rupestre var.
messeriae Pignatti (1979: 363) ≡ Helichrysum erreae var. messeriae (Pignatti) Raimondo in Giardina et al. (2007:
363).
Type:―ITALY. Sicily, Marettimo, June−August 1900, Ross 243 (FI!, holotype, image available at http://parlatore.msn.unifi.it/types/
search.php).
Distribution:―Endemic to Marettimo, the most Western island of the Egadi archipelago.
Helichrysum panormitanum subsp. latifolium (Gussone) Maggio, Bruno, Guarino, Senatore & Ilardi (2016: 8) ≡
Helichrysum panormitanum var. latifolium Gussone (1844: 467).
Type:―ITALY. Sicily, Bagheria a Capo Zafferano [manu Gussone], Maggio, Gussone s.n. (NAP-GUSS!, lectotype designated by Galbany-
Casals et al. 2006: 497).
Distribution:―Endemic to the coastal capes of Northern Sicily, from Mt. Catalfano to Termini Imerese.
