                · Area Priority 1
                · Topic SUSTDEV-2005-1.1.7-1 Grid issues - Distributed generation

            Proposal abstract :

Needs: In Europe some communities like islands or mountain resorts do not all enjoy the comfort of
trouble-free electrical grids and need access to complementary energies abundant in their surroundings,
while keeping their tourism capital intact.

Issue : One of the obstacles to the fast adoption of renewable energies is the difficulty to integrate their
electricity production into the conventional grid in a plug & play fashion and that regulation technologies
            have to innovate further.

            Challenge & objectives
The project challenges are to develop a full technological chain of innovative equipments to store &
regulate PV, eolic and other renewable energy productions to smoothly be connected instantly to
any conventional grid while overcoming any network fault. Scientific achievements will be network
fault-riding & generic tool boxes of the said technologies and the technological prototypes
(reversible power converters) will be able to simultaneously manage different RE sources in a plug
and play fashion while fully compliant to the grid standard requirements.

A real-scale implementation of the technology will be experimented on 2 sites, one on a Slovenian Alpine
resort and the other on the italian island of Flavignana. These sites will serve as benchmarks and showcases
for the measure of the benefits this technology could bring to these types of communities.

Smes&Universities : 4 SMEs and 4 laboratories from Slovenia, Italy,UK, France will blend their
resources to achieve, within 36 months, the turn-key system with high ecological performances and as
showcases of the “green on grid” policies.
