ABSTRACT
Mollusc communities from the four Archipelagos of the South Tyrrhenian Sea
and Ustica Island were classified at the specific level and compared. Sampling was
carried on during two oceanographic cruises of the research vessel “Bannock”; the first
cruise took place along the coasts of Ustica Island, Egadi and Aeolian Archipelagos
(July-August 1983), while the second one took place in the Partenopean and Pontine
Archipelagos (October 1984).
On the whole 137 stations between 15 and 540 m depth were investigated by
means of a grab; a total of 527 living specimens was sorted out, leading to the
recognition of 90 species.
The cluster analysis evidenced a low similarity between the archipelagos and the
absence of a “typical” insular fauna. Only two species were present in all of the
archipelagos and in the Ustica Island: the bivalve Tellina balaustina L., 1758 and the
pliplacophoran Lepidopleurus (Parachiton) africanus Nierstrasz, 1906. Curiously, the
Poliplacophoran L. (P.) africanus is considered among the most rare Mediterranean
chiton species. Notwithstanding the distance from the coast and the general absence of
main rivers, molluscs indicating bottom instability and/or organic matter presence, were
found in the islands of Vulcano & Palmarola.
