Ammos and Gournes beaches which are located in the island of Crete; Maremma
beach which is situated in Tuscany at the north-western coast of Italy (Figure 1).
These data include both taxa composition and abundance. The biotic data collected
during the Maremma sampling activities include a single (spring) season (18/05/2003-
22/05/2003), while those collected from the Cretan Sea cover six sampling periods
(May 2002, July-August 2002, November 2002, January-February 2003, April-May
2003, June-July 2003). Taxa were identified down to species level, where possible;
(ii) Data deriving from an exhaustive search of the literature on the intertidal sandy
beaches, in the Mediterranean (74 studied sandy beaches). This source includes only
taxa composition data (taxon presence/absence).

Figure 1. Map of the study sites in the Mediterranean along with the number of macrofaunal taxa in each
of the sample sites. The left column stands for species number (bottom to top: Polychaete, Crustacea,
varia, total) and the right column is for abundance of the total macrofauna).
