tween the last two ones, in which there can be seen sandy beaches from various areas
of the Mediterranean: Levantine Basin, Adriatic Sea, Aegean Sea, Central Basin and
Western Mediterranean.
Biodiversity across the Mediterranean intertidal habitat
Species distribution to the various Mediterranean sandy beaches was analyzed by
means of the Taxonomic Distinctness Indices. The resulting funnels are presented in
Figure 5.
Most of the extensively studied beaches, locations from Crete and from the
Maremma Regional Park, are located at the lower part of the funnel (Figure 5a),
indicating a lower than expected Delta values. These low Delta values are associated
with low values in Variation in Taxonomic Distinctness (Lambda) shown in Figure
5b. In this graph, many other sandy beach locations seem to have lower than expected
Lambda values, as well.
However, the pan-Mediterranean biodiversity pattern is significantly different
when the main focus is on polychaetes. Figure 6 shows the resulting funnels of the
Taxonomic Distinctness Indices as calculated from the polychaete species distribu-
tion in the Mediterranean sandy beaches. The Cretan sandy beaches, the Maremma
