Results
General description of the sandy beach benthic environment
The abiotic data from the six sampling sites (Figure 2) show considerable vari-
ance in their geomorphological and hydrological state. For the Maremma beach lower
temperature values are generally observed in the Maremma site 3, while for the Cre-
tan beaches higher temperature values are indicative for Gournes beach. Accordingly,
the salinity values are higher at Elafonisi beach. The values from the redox potential
seem to be correlated with the depth in the sediments. Stations 3 and 4 generally show
