included  and  excluded.  After  developing  this  argument  I  analyse  ways  that  tradition  is

               employed  strategically  to  negotiate  political  contexts.  I  then  consider  the  relationship  of


               tradition to ontology and affect. Finally I illustrate how tradition is a form of consumption.




               Tradition as Boundary: Inclusion and Exclusion of a Fishery


               Tradition forms boundaries. One of the starkest examples is the phenomenon of origin labels.

               This  is  true  especially  in  Italy  where  terroir   products  have  legal,  cultural  and  economic

               weight.  Examples  include  the  well  known  Parmigiano  Reggiano  and  Prosciutto  di  Parma.

               These  are  as  much  marketing  strategies  as  they  are  strategies  for  preserving  tradition  and

               building local and regional identity. Even though there is no legal origin label for bluefin


               products such as canned bluefin from Carloforte or Favignana (see figs. 6.1 and 6.2), these

               products draw on the allure of origin products. I want to keep this context in mind as I discuss


               how  reality  making  (or  fostering  conditions  for  new  realities  to  emerge)  involves  the

               establishment of boundaries – technical, social, ecological and discursive.
