That said, there are aspects to the precarity of labour in the tonnara that are not new. The fishery after all is
seasonal and has historically been marked by fluctuations in the workforce, even if some worked all year round.
Historically the workforce was made in part from prisoners (in the period of Spanish reign) and those who
would otherwise be working at factories if the work were available.

96 I have researched the trends in sustainably-caught tinned tuna mostly for the period of 2012 – 2014. However,
I have not researched the Pacific Island situation (for a discussion of how Greenpeace have addressed social
aspects of tuna fishing in the Pacific Islands see Barclay 2013).
