The states will also therefore play a more prominent role in realising the proposal, as it is up to the EU states
to accept and then for each relevant member state to implement the accepted recommendations. It will be
interesting to see what kinds of local Italian politics might work as a force to again change the assemblage that
               makes the traps possible.
93 Jobs relating to the core work of the traps rather than indirect such as maintenance, artisans, local auction
sellers, transport etc. which can reach a figure of 100.

That said, there are aspects to the precarity of labour in the tonnara that are not new. The fishery after all is
seasonal and has historically been marked by fluctuations in the workforce, even if some worked all year round.
Historically the workforce was made in part from prisoners (in the period of Spanish reign) and those who
would otherwise be working at factories if the work were available.

Note: this is a different person to Amoroso di Natale, the marine scientist, who I have referred to previously.

               CONCLUSION
96 I have researched the trends in sustainably-caught tinned tuna mostly for the period of 2012 – 2014. However,
I have not researched the Pacific Island situation (for a discussion of how Greenpeace have addressed social
aspects of tuna fishing in the Pacific Islands see Barclay 2013).
