& Furnari 1970); Etna colata 1381 (Poli & Grillo 1972); According to Marchetti (2005, in litte-
ris) A. obovatum var. protobillotii could occur in Pantelleria; S. Tecla di Acireale!, Timpa di
Acireale!, basaltic riverbed of the Alcantara! – R.
29. Asplenium obovatum subsp. lanceolatum (Fiori) P. Silva in Agron. Lusit. 12: 24
(1951) [Bas. A. fontanum Bernh. var. lanceolatum Fiori, Nuova Fl. Anal. Ital. 1 (1): 26
(1923); A. billotii F. W. Schultz]
Tetraploid form sometimes hardly morphologically distinguishable from A. obovatum subsp.
obovatum (diploid). The high variability in sporal size makes difficult discrimination between
the two subspecies (Marchetti 2004). – Shady cliffs. – Perhaps in the past misidentified with A.
obovatum var. protobillotii but probably occurring in Sicily and not in the surrounding islands
(Marchetti 2004); Collected by us at Cuddia Gelfizer. A doubtful form generically reported for
Sicily by Zodda (1908: 114). – R.
30. Asplenium balearicum Shivas in Brit. Fern Gaz. 10: 75 (1969)

Cracks in walls and carbonate rocks, as well as in ground. – Palermo vetta di M. Cuccio nelle

* Asplenium trichomanes L., Sp. Pl.: 1080 (1753) subsp. trichomanes
The infraspecific variability was unknown to 19 th century botanists. This taxon is diploid,
microtherm and calcifugous: its distribution southwards stops at the Tuscan Apennine (Marchetti
2004). – Cracks in walls and rocks, preferably on siliceous substrata. – Reports by Lojacono
(1909) probably refer to th enext subspecies: Catalfano, Madonie, Val Demone, Busambra,
Nicolosi, Messina, M. Scuderi, Vulcano (Lojacono), Catania, S. Michele (Tineo) (Lojacono
1909).
32. Asplenium trichomanes subsp. quadrivalens D. E. Mey. in Ber. Deutsch. Bot. Ges. 74:
456 (1964)
Cracks in walls and carbonate rocks, also in ground. – Catalfano, Madonie, Val Demone,
Busambra, Nicolosi, Messina, M. Scuderi, Vulcano (Lojacono), Catania, S. Michele (Tineo)
