La leggenda ha voluto concedersi qualche libertà tramandando lo specchio di mare di Cala Rossa

ma si affrontarono le flotte romana e cartaginese nel corso della prima guerra punica. Era il 241 a.C.
e il mito tramanda che tanti furono i morti che le acque del mare divennero rosse per il sangue.
Fu il cartaginese Annone a voler cercare riparo dal vento in quel di Marettimo. Ma la sua flotta fu inter-
cettata prima di raggiungere la mèta e completamente distrutta.

Legend decided to take some liberties by handing down the stretch of sea off Cala Rossa as the back-
ground to this epic battle that in truth was fought off Levanzo, behind whose outline the Roman and
Carthaginian fleets clashed during the First Punic War. It was 241 BC and myth has it that there were
so many corpses that the waters of the sea became red with blood.
It was the Carthaginian Hanno that decided to seek shelter from the wind in the area around Marettimo.
But his fleet was intercepted before reaching its destination and completely destroyed.
