Botanica!, zoologica! and sometimes herpetological evidence supports the hypo-
thesis that also the volcanic islands (Aeolian, LTstica, Pantelleria and Linosa) were
connected at some time to the older neighbouring land masses.
A well developed postfemoral tubercle may occur in Testudo marginata; the
recliscovery of Natrix maura on the Galita Island (Tunisia) is pointed out by the
author.
