Other abbreviations in references, taxonomy and nomenclature quotations regarding the
protologue of the names of species have been made according to nomenclatural rules in the
Code (International Code of Botanic Nomenclature, current edition) and therefore they do
not need any explanations in this text.

13. Synonyms

Many taxonomic problems reported in the botanical works of the 19 century are still
unsolved, due also to a poor reading of the texts. For this reason in this Catalogue synonyms
of each taxon has been carefully treated. In particular, it has been decided to consider the
binomials (even if not correctly applied = nomina male apposita) used by many authors
(Gussone, Todaro, Lojacono, etc.). A misidentification is acknowledged by the words “sensu
auctoris Fl. Sic. not auctoris hodie validati”, or “sensu auctoris sic. not auctoris hodie vali-
dati”, or “sensu auctoris”; finally quite wrong identifications are followed by the formula
“«taxon name» sensu auctoris”. In the conviction that the present catalogue will be mostly
used by Italian scholars, the most common synonymic structures of the current Italian Floras
(Pignatti 1982, Fiori 1923-29) have been included. Due to space limits, in the list of syn-
onyms the distinction between taxonomic and nomenclatural synonyms has been avoided.

14. Nothotaxa.
Nothotaxa in this Catalogue have not been generally included. However, names of pre-
sumed nothotaxa in uncertain cases referring to the hybrid character of the populations
already studied by the authors (for example, populations considered as hybrid in the past
have been later revealed as referable to good species, and vice versa: see the case of
Hieracium symphytifolium). Consequently nothotaxa (or such presumed) concerning Salix,
Rosa, Rubus, Mentha, Verbascum genera have generally been reported in bold-italics. Only
in the case in which the author stated the hybrid character of the taxon, its name is written
in italics (without number). Case of clearly recognized nothotaxa, as for instance the
Orchidaceae, reference is made to Bartolo & Pulvirenti (1997 b), and – only for Ophrys –
also to Galesi (1999 a).

15. Toponyms
Toponyms are reported as in the original works. In order to help the reader, Appendix 2
offers a conversion table from the ancient toponym to the presently correspondent one.
