                Wet habitat. – Sicilia (Jalas & Suominen 1976, 3: 27). Specimens are lacking in Sicilian herbaria.

                Along watercouses. – Everywhere along undisturbed water courses from the coast to the low
                mountain.  According to Brullo & Spampinato (1988) to be excluded from the Peloritani
                Mountains and from the majority of the Etna Mountain. – NC.

                Close to Salix pedicellata Desf. – ES –– Water courses. – NE Sicily in Catania and Messina
                Provinces (Brullo & Spampinato 1990). – C.

                Doubtfuly reported on a single specimen from Palermo herbarium but wuth missing locality ref-
                erence (Lojacono 1904). According to Martini & Paiero (1988) to be excluded from Sicilian
                flora.

                Woods (not necessarily moist). – Not reported by Lojacono (1909), but present in Sicily accord-
                ing to Martini & Poiero (1988); Fiori (1923); Pignatti (1982). Bosco di Maletto sull’Etna
                (Barbagallo & al. 1979 a); Fiumi: Alcantara, Rizzuto, Comunelli (Ferro & Di Benedetto 1979).
                Also on the Etna at the Grotta Intraleo!, Nebrodi and Peloritani Mountains!, Enna! and Agrigento
                area! – NC.
              * Salix purpurea L., Sp. Pl.: 1017 (1753) subsp. purpurea
                River beds. – Unspecified localities. Absent in Sicily according to Martini & Paiero (1988). Fl.
                Europ. 1: 63 (1993) “widespread, particularly in the mountains”. Probably to be excluded. – ?R.

                River beds. – According to Martini & Poiero (1988) it is the hybrid “S. pedicellata × purpurea”.
                – “Messina al Faro ne’ fossi del luogo detto le Mortelle, ubi cum amicis Tineo et Nyman colle-
                gi …” (Gussone 1845: 624); Mortelle (Tineo 1846); Mirto (Lojacono 1904: 394); The locality of
                Mortelle has disappeared for draining, few individuals near Ortora (Nicotra 1904); Valle Ippari
                (lecta 2003 a Giardina, Cundari & Fontana, herb. Giardina); Randazzo al Flascio (Raimondo &
